About Us

Our Mission
At Hartwell Planning, we strive to empower our clients through optimum use of their financial resources to live rich and rewarding lives.
“An important key to financial literacy is the conscious linking of personal finances to aspirations in life. By writing them down and revising them periodically, we make them our own. This is more than an exercise – it is part of the process of realizing our goals.”

Sheila Walker Hartwell

Sheila Walker Hartwell founded Hartwell Planning in 1996, a fee-only financial planning firm, initially to offer divorced and widowed women customized and comprehensive financial planning without a financial conflict of interest. Today, she is very proud of the firm’s solid, long-standing relationships with clients nationwide who come from all walks of life.

She is a frequent speaker about comprehensive financial planning issues at non-profit organizations including CUNY at several campuses, Athena Leadership Lab at Barnard College, College of Mount St. Vincent, St. Joseph’s College, Actors Fund, and Symphony Space, among others.

Sheila is the author of Lift the Burden of Debt: How to Climb Out of Debt and Stay Out in 10 Easy Steps, a program to guide people out of unwanted debt permanently.

A citizen of the United States and Canada, Sheila earned a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario, an M.B.A. in Finance from Columbia’s Business School in New York and a Certificate in Financial Planning from New York University’s Center for Finance, Law and Taxation. Before becoming a personal financial planner, Sheila was a senior vice president in advertising, where she was an account manager and strategic planner for Fortune 500 companies. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Sheila has called New York City her home for over 40 years.

When not overseeing her clients’ personal finances, Sheila delights in shepherding her five grandchildren on New York City adventures – from Broadway musicals and museums to movies and burger joints. Her other loves include theatre, opera, ballet and symphony.
